History of Phlebotomy: Bloodletting

Bloodletting was a procedure dating all the way back to early Egyptians and Greeks.  Some theories stated that disease or other aliments were caused by an imbalance in your blood and by cutting into a vein with a sharp instrument and releasing the blood they attempted to rid the body of excess blood that was thought to contain the disease or to provide a calming effect to the inflicted.  There are some record cases where this was thought to actually be a benefit to the patient but many other cases where it did much more harm than help.  It is even believed that excessive bloodletting contributed to the death of George Washington in 1799.   There are thought to be only three known photographs of this early form of phlebotomy and you can see two of them here from around 1860, courtesy of Burns Medical Archive.... Arizona State Board of Nursing 2011 Pass Rate Numbers Released
